“I can’t model. I won’t know what to do. I’m awkward in photos. I’m not photogenic. You should ask so-and-so, she knows how to model.”

That was the reply I got when I asked my friend Bev to do a session with me for promo and sample material. I gave her a whole spiel about how I didn’t want a model because 99% of my clients aren’t models, how it’s my job to direct her, how I’d make sure she looked great, yadayadayada. She still didn’t want to do it, but she’s much too nice to say no to her good friend Tessa, so I strong-armed her into it. Normally I’m not a pushy person, but I knew I could get great shots out of her.

Golden light, sparkling snow, playing in traffic, snow angels, and a dog with a LOT of energy.

After rescheduling twice we finally got the perfect winter day. This is the kind of day we pretended to have here, here, and here (those days we powered through frozen fingers, noses, & toes) but this was the real deal; a warm, sunny, beautiful Alberta winter day.

I cannot wait to shoot this gorgeous couple’s wedding this summer   : )

Engaged – G & N

You know what’s really surprising about these photos? You can’t even tell that pretty much the whole time we were near freezing! If Calgary could just coordinate Chinooks with my session that’d be great. We stopped for a coffee warm up break, which was both delicious and necessary, but it was the second part outside that really got chilly. Looking at the photos, N says “I really like that last one, it turned out great considering I couldn’t even feel my face!”

These two got engaged on a beautiful beach in New Zealand. G had secretly brought along the gorgeous ring he had custom designed for N by Davidson & Co. Jewels here in Calgary.

Congratulations  you two, you were great to work with and obviously super tough!

My Vacay Vid – A Side Project

At the end of November we went to Hawaii with Bruno’s sister, her boyfriend, and our friend Justin. We rented VW Campervans and drove around Oahu camping, surfing, and having the best time ever.

Ever since making this video from Sarah and Denis’ maternity series I’d been wanting to do one for myself, and this was the perfect time & place.

Even though my shooting style typically includes a storytelling element, turning the stills into video really brings it to a whole new level. I’ve also been playing with time-lapses, so I shot a few and worked them in as well. Of course this is all new to me, and it’s been a trial and error process, so it’s far from perfect, but so much fun.

Warning: If little ears are listening you might want to do a big cough at 0:51 and 1:00  : )
